The interim head coach of England national football team, Lee Carsley has described his team’s 2-1 defeat against Greece on Thursday as disappointing.

Lee Carsley who was brought in to head the national team in an interim capacity after the resignation of coach Gareth Southgate admitted that his side were the second best team during the game.

In the UEFA Nations League match, Vangelis Pavlidis’ late goal gave Greece the maximum three points after Jude Bellingham cancelled out Pavlidis’ match opener.

After the unexpected defeat at the Wembley Stadium in London, coach Carsley told ITV that the two goals England conceded came from a mistake.

“I think we were probably second best for a lot of tonight … it’s disappointing”, he said.

“You are going to get setbacks … it’s important we respond well against Finland.

“We tried something different, overload the midfield. You have experimented with it and we are disappointed it didn’t come off.”

He added, “All of the goals came from mistakes … even at 1-1 we were quite fortunate at that point … when you’ve got someone of Harry Kane’s quality, it rules [the new system] out … in the future we’ve got to have that courage to try things.”

Meanwhile, the manager of the Greek national team, Ivan Jovanovic, attributed their 2-1 victory over England to the inspiration his players drew from the memory of George Baldock.

George Baldock, a former Greek defender, tragically passed away in his home in Greece just a day before the match on Thursday.

Jovanovic emphasized that football took a back seat in such a moment of loss and highlighted the impact Baldock had on the team during his time with them.

“At such moments football comes second”, the coach.

“The time he [Baldock] was with the team he made his mark and that was visible in the way the players played today.”

Baldock who was born in the United Kingdom, made 12 international appearances for Greece before his sudden demise.
