Former Chelsea defender, Glen Johnson has argued that the club shouldn’t have missed out on signing Super Eagles of Nigeria striker, Victor Osimhen this summer.
Despite being linked with Victor Osimhen throughout the summer, Chelsea ultimately missed out on securing the Nigerian striker in the last minutes.
The Premier League side made significant efforts to secure his signature on transfer deadline day but was unable to reach an agreement on wages. Reports claimed that the Stamford Bridge-based side were offering to pay the reigning Africa Player of the Year way lower than his wages at Napoli.
Hence, the 25-year-old Nigeria international joined Galatasaray on a season-long loan deal as the Turkish side were seen as his last chance to leave Napoli this summer.
In his argument, Johnson expressed his belief that Chelsea should have signed Osimhen to strengthen their young squad.
He highlighted Osimhen as the significant signing that Chelsea missed out on, especially considering the substantial investment in other young players who may not immediately break into the first team.
“The obvious one would be Victor Osimhen. He was the big name they wanted and didn’t get,” Johnson told Betfred.
“They’ve signed loads of youngsters that may not be in the team straight away, despite spending a lot of money on them, and I think Osimhen is the big signing that they’ve missed out on.”
