Nentawe Yilwatda, the ministerial nominee for the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, has called for increased federal allocation to Northern Nigeria, citing that around 65 percent of the nation’s impoverished population resides in the region.
Yilwatda made this appeal on Wednesday while addressing the Senate during his confirmation screening.
He argued that the allocation of resources should be based on a needs assessment, emphasizing that the northern region requires additional support to address severe poverty levels.
Yilwatda said, “65 percent of poor people live in the North while 35 percent live in the South.
“We should talk about what is needed in each local government and states, revenue allocation should be shared by how poor or rich states are.”
Following his presentation, the Senate permitted Yilwatda to “bow and leave” as is customary for nominees.
President Bola Tinubu nominated Yilwatda last week to succeed Betta Edu, who was dismissed as the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction.
Later today, the Senate is expected to make a final decision on Yilwatda’s confirmation as a member of the Federal Executive Council (FEC).
Naija News understands that the nominees to screen include Dr. Nentawe Yilwatda, Muhammadu Maigari Dingyadi (Minister of Labour and Employment), Bianca Odinaka Odumegu-Ojukwu (Minister of State, Foreign Affairs), Dr. Jumoke Oduwole (Minister of Industry, Trade, and Development), Idi Muktar Maiha (Minister of Livestock Development), Rt. Hon. Yusuf Abdullahi Ata (Minister of State, Housing), and Dr. Suwaiba Said Ahmad (Minister of State, Education).
