Former Spain international and FC Barcelona star, Andrés Iniesta has finally retired from professional football at 40 years old.

Andrés Iniesta who is regarded as one of the greatest midfielders of all time, has recently been showcasing his skills in the UAE with Emirates Club. Before that, he spent five years in Japan with Vissel Kobe after leaving a memorable legacy at Camp Nou in 2018.

Iniesta, who emerged from Barca’s La Masia academy alongside the likes of Lionel Messi, Xavi, and Sergio Busquets, made 674 appearances for the Blaugrana. He played a pivotal role in securing nine La Liga titles and four Champions League crowns for the team.

During his time with Spain, Iniesta’s 131 caps led to victory in two European Championships and the 2010 World Cup, where he scored a dramatic extra-time goal in the final against the Netherlands.

According to Relevo, Iniesta will officially announce his retirement on October 8 – a date that holds significance as his favourite shirt number.

While there were rumours about a potential move to MLS with Inter Miami, Iniesta is now focused on pursuing a career in coaching.

He has openly expressed his desire to return to Barca at some point in his life, stating, “Obviously, I would like to return to Barca at some point in my life because that’s how I feel, but I don’t know when or how to say now, nor does anyone else. We’ll see how things go during this time and then we’ll see where we are.”
